Geometry Regents: How to Master Proofs & Transformations
The Geometry Regents stands out from the other math exams because of two things: writing proofs and working with transformations. Master those, plus the core theorems and formulas, and you're in great shape. Here's where to focus.
Writing proofs that score
Proofs intimidate students, but they follow patterns. Practice writing clear, logically ordered statements with a justification for each step. Graders reward valid reasoning, so even a proof that takes a slightly different path earns credit if each step is justified. The only way to get good is to write a lot of them.
Transformations and congruence
Understand rigid motions — translations, reflections, rotations — and how they establish congruence and similarity. These show up throughout the exam, both in multiple choice and in proofs, so make sure you can perform and describe each transformation precisely.
Triangles, circles, and trig
Know your triangle relationships and theorems, circle and arc properties, and right-triangle trigonometry (SOH-CAH-TOA and the Pythagorean theorem). These are dependable point-earners that appear every year.
Coordinate geometry, volume, and constructions
Be ready for coordinate-geometry problems, volume and surface area of 3-D solids (memorize the formulas), and compass-and-straightedge constructions. Practice the construction steps so your hand knows them on exam day.
