How to Use the NYSED Reference Tables (Science Regents)
Here's a secret about the science Regents exams: a huge number of questions can be answered directly from the reference tables you're handed at the start. Students who know those tables cold have a massive edge. Students who ignore them leave easy points on the table — literally.
Know what's in the booklet before exam day
Each science Regents has its own reference tables: the Earth Science Reference Tables (ESRT), the Chemistry Reference Tables, and the Physics Reference Tables. Spend time flipping through your subject's booklet weeks before the test. You should know what's on every page so that during the exam you instantly think, 'that's a table question — page 3.'
Practice finding answers fast
It's not enough to know the tables exist — you need to navigate them quickly under pressure. As you do practice questions, force yourself to locate the relevant chart, scale, or formula in the booklet instead of from memory. Speed comes from reps. By exam day, looking things up should feel automatic.
Use the formulas, don't memorize blindly
In Chemistry and Physics, the equations you need are given to you. The skill being tested is choosing the right one and plugging in correctly — watch your units and significant figures. Don't waste energy memorizing formulas that are printed right there; spend it on knowing when to use each one.
Cross-check your answers
The tables are also a great way to sanity-check. If you calculate a density, a half-life, or a wavelength, glance back at the relevant scale to see if your answer is even in the right ballpark. Catching an obviously-wrong number can save you a question you'd otherwise miss.
